Mentioning other artists in posts and comments

An @mention is how you tag another artist in a post or comment. When you mention someone, their name becomes a link to their profile, and they get a notification so they know they were mentioned. It’s the same idea as @-mentions on Instagram or Facebook, with one small difference — you mention by display name, not by a separate handle.

How to mention someone

  1. Start writing a community post or a comment.

  2. Type the @ character where you want the mention to appear.

  3. Begin typing the artist’s name. A list of matching artists pops up under your cursor as you type.

  4. Use the arrow keys to highlight the artist you want, then press Enter — or click their name in the list.

  5. The mention is inserted as a clickable link. Keep writing your post or comment as normal.

When you publish, the mention appears as a link to that artist’s profile, and the artist gets a notification.

Tip

Mentions only work for artists who already have a profile on ArtHelper. If a name doesn’t show up in the suggestion list, that artist isn’t on the platform yet — write their name as normal text, or invite them.

Mentioning more than one artist

  1. Type @ and pick the first artist as above.

  2. Type a space, then @ again, and pick the next artist.

  3. Repeat for as many artists as you’d like to tag. There’s no fixed limit, but two or three mentions read more naturally than a long list.

When to mention someone

Mentions work best when they’re genuine. A few good uses:

  • Credit a collaborator — if you painted alongside another artist, mention them so readers can click through to see their work too.

  • Reply to or build on someone’s idea — if you’re writing a follow-up to another artist’s post, mention them so they know.

  • Recommend an artist — “If you liked this, you should look at @Anna Holt’s work” is one of the most helpful things you can do for a fellow artist.

  • Answer a question by tagging the right expert — “@David Park has written about this — David, any thoughts?”

Avoid mentioning artists for attention or out of context — it feels like spam to them and to the readers of the post.

What the mentioned artist sees

When you mention someone, they get a notification in their bell menu and (depending on their settings) an email. The notification includes the post or comment title and a link to read it.

Once they open the post, your mention shows up as their highlighted name. Most artists treat a mention as an invitation to reply — but they’re not obligated to.

Editing or removing a mention

  1. Open the post or comment you want to edit.

  2. Use the edit option — usually a small menu next to your own post or comment.

  3. Select the mention and delete it like any other piece of text, or replace it with a different artist by typing @ and choosing someone new.

  4. Save your edit.

The artist you originally mentioned still got a notification at the time you first published, but the edited post will no longer link to their profile.

What others can see

Mentions are part of the post or comment they live inside. Anyone who can see the post can see the mention and click through to that artist’s profile. That includes logged-out readers, since most community posts are public.

Common questions

Why doesn’t an artist show up in my suggestion list?

The list only shows artists who already have an ArtHelper profile. If you’re sure they’re on the platform, try typing a few more letters of their name — short queries return too many matches and the artist you want may be lower in the list.

Can I mention someone who isn’t on ArtHelper?

No. Mentions require an existing profile to link to. Write their name as plain text and, if you’d like them to see the post, invite them to ArtHelper separately.

Will the mentioned artist always be notified?

Yes, unless they’ve muted notifications from you specifically. Mentions are one of the most reliable ways to make sure another artist sees a post.

Does an @mention count as a follow or a connection?

No. A mention is just a tag inside a post or comment. It does not follow them, connect with them, or change your relationship in any way. If you want to follow up after a good exchange, click their profile from the mention and use Follow or Connect.
